I know I’m always sharing makeup tutorials and beauty tricks, but I really need to stress the importance of taking care of your skin and giving it the attention it deserves, instead of hiding it behind layers of makeup. Remember, makeup is meant to enhance your features and beauty, not change or hide who you are. Makeup artists are not magicians, they can’t make scars disappear and pimples fade away, they can only reduce their appearance. So the clearer and smoother the skin is, the better the makeup application.
In this post, I’ll be sharing tips on how to prep your skin for seamless makeup application.
It doesn’t matter whether you’re applying your everyday makeup, or that you’re going to a fancy event, we always want our makeup to look clean and flawless. #IwokeUpLikeThis 😉
The easiest and best way to achieve this is by starting off with a gorgeous canvas i.e your skin! Think about when an artist is about to start that million dollar painting, they need a clean canvas to work with – so be sure to prepare you skin so that the end result is smooth and has staying power.
Here are some quick steps to take before applying makeup:
A completely clean slate is key for pre-makeup prep. Make sure you use a cleanser that thoroughly cleanses your face and works with your skin type. I normally stay away from recommending skincare products because the last thing I want is to recommend a product and you react differently to it (Also, I’m saving myself so you don’t come back and say “Pabi you sold me dreams” lol). So the best thing is to find a cleanser which gently exfoliates, removes makeup and is oil-free. For those with acne-prone skin, make sure you use a formula with active, acne-fighting ingredients.
You need to exfoliate for three reasons: 1. It totally cleanses the skin, removing the build-up from the pores and helping to get rid of whiteheads and blackheads. 2. It improves the skin’s texture to give your face a soft and flawless look, and 3. It stimulates blood flow to your face to give the appearance of a youthful glow.
3. Treat & Moisturize
After cleansing and exfoliating the skin, you should always moisturize.Like, Always! Makeup does not set well on dry, dehydrated skin and the last thing you want is to end up with makeup that cracks on your skin! Eeeeek! Try a hydrating formula instead.
The final step in makeup prep is applying primer! I have to admit, I’ve only recently started using a primer… I guess I just never saw the importance… But let me tell you, it makes a difference! Primer will truly enhance the application of your foundation, as well as its staying power. And, there are so many fabulous formulas out there that work with the specific look you’re going for: matte, illuminating, tinted, etc. I use the Yardley Illuminating primer and absolutely love it.
